Pickens is the perfect community for those that love to spend time in the South Carolina sun. Residents can enjoy the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains at the parks and recreational facilities located within the city and surrounding areas. The parks and trail systems in Pickens are managed by the Recreation Department. Jaycee Park (149 North Homestead Road) covers 23 acres around Town Creek. This recreational facility offers a playground, tennis courts, baseball fields, and a football field. It is connected to the Pickens Recreation Center and fields, providing even more opportunities to stay active indoors and out. The recently completed Town Creek Bike Park (545 State Road S-39-190) is one of the more unique recreational facilities in the city. It is one of the premier off-road bike parks in the state. It offers a wide variety of trails, tracks, jumps, and more. The Doodle Trail connects the city of Pickens with the city of Easley via a 7.5 mile trail. The trail is built on a converted, historic railroad track. It is open from the morning to evening daily for walking, running, rollerblading, and biking. Residents looking to really experience the great outdoors will love Pickens convenient location near the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Highway, which is a route home to many state parks.

The city of Pickens strives itself on providing excellent K-12 educational institutions for its residents. Academic excellence for the youth of the city is a major priority. The community is served by School District of Pickens County. This district operates schools within Pickens and other local communities, including Central, Easley, and Liberty. Pickens students in grades Pre-K through 5th attend one of 3 elementary schools in town. These schools include Ambler Elementary School (838 Ambler School Road), Hagood Elementary School (435 Sparks Lane), and Pickens Elementary School (567 Hampton Avenue). Pickens Middle School (140 Torch Lane) educates students in grades 6th through 8th. There is one high school, Pickens High School (150 Blue Flame Drive), in town for students in grades 9th through 12th.
